There’s been a big development in the case against a former top figure in Australian rugby who is set to learn his fate over a string of child abuse material charges.
AFP officers arrested 41-year-old James Selby at his Surry Hills home on September 17 last year.
Now it can be revealed Selby will be sentenced for nine counts of possessing or sending child abuse material later this year.
Acting Judge Graeme Henson also approved an application to alter Selby’s bail conditions to change his residential address and reporting station.
Selby worked with Rugby Australia as a community rugby strategist.
He was immediately fired following his arrest. In a statement released at the time, Rugby Australia said it “has been made aware that the Australian Federal Police (AFP) has charged an RA employee with criminal offences”.
It continued: “The RA Board met and resolved to terminate the individual’s employment effective immediately.”
Last October, Selby was released on bail with strict conditions essentially banning him from the internet.
The conditions stated he could not go within 100 metres of a school, childcare centre or be left unaccompanied with a minor without another adult present.
Selby will be sentenced at Downing Centre District Court on September 19 for two counts of possessing or controlling child abuse material, one count of accessing child abuse material, four counts of using a carriage service to transmit or distribute child porn, one count of using a carriage service to solicit child abuse material and one count of using a carriage service to transmit child abuse material to self.
