Jackson Travers: Bra Boy appeals violent Redfern attack

A Bra Boy who threw a flurry of punches at a man’s head near Redfern police station has appealed his sentence – arguing he was the smaller of the two men and felt threatened.

CCTV footage has revealed the moment a Bra Boy unleashes a flurry of punches.

A young Bra Boy who punched a man multiple times in the head near Redfern police station has appealed the severity of his sentence, arguing he was the smaller man in the fight and felt threatened.

Jackson Travers, 21, was convicted for affray earlier this year after bashing Sateki Tuitavake in a laneway outside the Regent Redfern Hotel at about midnight on September 20 last year.

He was in the district court on Monday appealing the severity of his sentence.

Judge Jane Culver dismissed the appeal and stated Travers was “considerably fortunate” he did not receive a custodial sentence for the violent attack.

Travers is no stranger to the courtroom and was acquitted alongside his brother in July 2019 of murdering homeless man Peter Hoffmann, who was found stabbed to death in his car in Maroubra on June 21, 2017 – a State of Origin night.

Just two months after being acquitted, Travers was involved in the Redfern attack. CCTV footage played in court on Monday appeared to show Travers starting the confrontation before throwing a flurry of punches which connected with Tuitavake’s head.

Tuitavake began to fight back but the incident was stopped when a marked police van pulled up seconds later.

A court heard the incident happened after Travers celebrated a South Sydney Rabbitohs win.

Travers was convicted for affray and sentenced to a three-year community correction order with supervision, as well as ordered to complete an anger management plan and follow any other medical treatment plans.

His defence lawyer asked for that sentence to be reduced to a one-year community correction order with supervision.

“Three years is excessive with the lack of any prior convictions,” she said.

His defence lawyer added that the affray only lasted about 15 seconds, the victim was seen to walk up to Travers before any punches were thrown, and “my client is the smaller of the two” and felt threatened.

She also said he had received treatment for anxiety and his mother, who he was close to, had died in recent years.

Judge Culver said people had died from one-punch attacks under similar circumstances.

“He was considerably fortunate that he was sentenced without a term of custody because this offence is so serious,” she said.

“I note that three years is appropriate with respect to the types of rehabilitation (Mr Travers) must undergo.

“The community correction order does not have a condition of community service. It does have its focus on treatment and it is appropriate.”

Travers resides in Eastlakes.
