PHIL Ferguson might have made a name for himself modelling hamburgers on his noggin — but don’t call him a meat-head.
Ferguson, aka Chili Philly, has perfected the art of crocheted wearables and his sweeping across social media with his quirky headgear.
After spending three years modelling designs from giant strawberries and hotdogs to Christmas trees and dinosaurs for his 140,000 Instagram followers, Ferguson said the inspiration for his unique woollen patterns came from an ambition to create drag costumes.
The fine arts’ graduate said the transition from sculpture into crochet was a “natural progression” of his artistic sensibility.
While he hoped to garner attention for the pieces, he never expected a following would develop so quickly — and while the colourful creations take an average of just two days to make there have been plenty of weeks of stiff fingers, he said.
Ferguson had to give himself a large break last year as he was slightly “afraid I’d get RSI”, he said.
The woolly treasures will be on display at the Australian Design Centre from Thursday, and represent a “bookend” of his work.
Ferguson hopes to branch out into “a bit more performance art”, and create “physical full body outfits ... really pushing myself more rather than just things to wear on my head,” he said.
Ferguson’s woolly treasures are on display at the Australian Design Centre in Darlinghurst from Thursday.
