The people of Sydney have spoken, and independent MP Alex Greenwich was their answer.
The returning representative for the seat of Sydney was no match for contenders, obtaining a 3.4 per cent swing in support on Election Day.
Alex Greenwich, who has held the seat of Sydney since the 2012 by-election, was up against Labor’s Jo Holder, the Liberal Party’s Lyndon Gannon, Fiona Douskou of The Small Business Party, Sustainable Australia’s Christopher Thomas and the Greens’ Jonathan Harms.
Mr Greenwich currently holds a total of 61.4 per cent of all two party preferred votes.
In front of a room full of supporters at Paddington RSL on Saturday night, Mr Greenwich said early indications showed they had won victory.
“We have obviously won most of the booths and in all of the booths we have had a really strong swing,” he said.
“Congratulations, we have had an amazing victory this election with such a strong swing and that is thanks to all of you.”
Mr Greenwich told Central Sydney Magazine on Monday that he was looking forward to the next four years as the candidate for Sydney.
“It was a tough and hard fought campaign, it was great to have received such strong mandate to continue work on climate change, on ending homelessness and increasing affordable housing,” he said.
“I went into this election with some pretty strong policies.
“With a strong result and a swing of about six per cent, I’m really grateful for the strong mandate to progress all those issues in the next parliament.”
Mr Greenwich said it was ‘really heartwarming’ to be able to share the victory with so many hundreds of supporters, volunteers and thousands of voters.
“I’m greatly humbled by the result and I am more committed than ever to work hard for Sydney.”
Mr Greenwich said he will be working closely with his fellow independents to “ensure we get progress”.
“To make sure we are looking after our environment, future proofing the economy and looking after the most vulnerable people along the way,” he said.
“I’m looking forward to working the strong relationship with fellow independents.”
