Dial-a-dealer drug runners, Codie Cowan, Daniel Sheather, Kingston Day sentenced.

They ran a sophisticated dial-a-dealer operation to deliver cocaine on Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs but three young men have been sentenced for their role in the drug network.

Two of the three young men at the centre of a dial-a-dealer network that supplied cocaine across Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs have been sentenced to prison, over what a District Court Judge has described as being the “scourge on society”.

Dial-a-dealer leader, Codie Cowan, 28, and drug runners Daniel Sheather, 27, and Kingston Day, 24, appeared for sentencing at Parramatta District Court on Friday, October 25, following early guilty pleas for the supply of commercial quantities of a prohibited drug after their May, 2018 arrests.

Judge Williams said the three men provided a serious example of “commercial businessmen peddling cocaine to the general public”.

“Police surveillance, which intercepted a drug deal near the rear entrance to the Coogee Bay Hotel, did not disrupt the network,” Ms Williams said. “In fact, the men took measures to change the dealer phone number in an effort to avoid detection.”

Court documents revealed a set of keys were found by police following Cowan’s arrest, which opened the lock to a Botony St, Kingford garage filled with money, drugs and packing equipment.

During a search of the garage a total of $767,550 was located, as well as a 1.209kg of cocaine with an estimated street value of up to $362,000.

Before handing down a sentence of eight years, three months to leader Codie Cowan for supply charges, and a further two years three months for proceeds of crime, Judge Williams said he was “prolific in supplying small amounts of cocaine” which he was paid $50 per deal to sell.

“The offenders went around with brazen assurance and met their customers in public places,” she said. “They even allowed people to buy cocaine on credit, which only increases addiction and drug debts.”

Ms Williams described Cowan as the “dispatch officer and trusted left tenant of the drug network”, after declaring he “recruited” the youngest member of the network, Kingston Day, into dealing.

Cowan was given a non-parole period of five years, four months.

Marist Brothers Kogarah graduate, Daniel Sheather, went from being an “above average student” to a drug user and runner, the court heard.

“He was the runner who would go out and deliver drugs,” she said. “He was a trusted member of the organisation and the criminality of the role was not spare of the moment.”

Sheather told the court he suffered from depression due to the broken relationship with his father, who had died several years after running out on his family, and the decision of his former girlfriend to terminate the life of his unborn child several months before his arrest.

“I never got to repair our relationship, I never got to repent, and now it is too late,” Sheather said of his father.

Ms Williams sentenced the 27-year-old to four years, 10 months and 15 days, with a non-parole period of three years, two months and two days.

Meanwhile, Kingston Day was “given a chance” by Ms Williams, who issued him with a two-year intensive corrections order.

She said she came to the decision after learning of Kingston’s lack of criminal record and “what he has already done to turn his life around”.

“If there is any time in your life that you needed to be given a chance, it is today,” she said. “But don’t think of it as a get out of jail free card … because you sailed so close to the alternative of jail.”

Day was sentenced to a six-month night curfew and 400 hours of community service.
