City of Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore said she doesn’t believe the NSW Government should introduce a carbon pollution tax on petrol and diesel cars before fixing NSW public transport.
Cr Moore has just returned from the C40 Women4Climate Conference in Paris and, as a result, she said she felt inspired.
While overseas, Cr Moore took the opportunity to visit London to meet with Mayor Sadiq Khan.
At the time, she was asked by media if she supported Mayor Sadiq Khan’s plan to introduce a carbon pollution tax on petrol and diesel cars.
Cr Moore will not be calling on the NSW Government to introduce a pollution tax, and is instead advocating to the NSW Government to look at other ways to decrease congestion in the inner city and improve air quality.
Cr Moore said the NSW Government would need to fix NSW public transport before investigating and implementing a similar policy in Sydney.
“Similar policies in Sydney would need to be investigated and implemented by the NSW Government who have legislative responsibility for roads and air quality, but they would need to fix NSW public transport first,” she said.
“I continue to advocate to the NSW Government to provide adequate funding and approvals to connect our network of safe cycling routes,” she said.
“I am coming home inspired by new ideas, technological innovations and opportunities and I am looking forward to working with Council and our brilliant staff to continue to accelerate climate action in our city and across Greater Sydney through our Resilient Sydney network.

“I also call on the NSW Government to learn from cities around the world and rapidly transition their bus and vehicle fleet to electric and hybrid vehicles — something the City began with its own fleet more than a decade ago.”
Cr Moore said the City of Sydney has been inspired by other cities since joining the C40 Climate Leadership in 2007.
She said some of these include the largest single carbon reduction project to date, which was inspired by the C40 city of Los Angeles.
It involved retrofitting the city’s street and park lights with energy-efficient LED lights.
Cr Moore also said she was impressed with Sadiq Khan’s work in increasing affordable rental housing, supporting creative industries and clearing up air pollution.
