POLICE from Sydney City Police Area Command have charged a 31-year-old man after he allegedly lit a fire at a petrol station in Chippendale on Tuesday.
Emergency services were called to Budget petrol station on Regent St at around 2.20am on February 26, after reports a fire had been deliberately lit on the forecourt.
Police will allege the man crawled towards the petrol pump on his hands and knees, before he released a small amount of petrol from the pump, before setting it on fire with a lighter and crawling away.
A NSW Police spokesman said the man then crawled over to a second pump, where he released more petrol and set it on fire.
Both of the fires self-extinguished and caused minor damage to the station.
Officers from Sydney City Police Area Command arrived at the scene to find a 31-year-old man suffering injuries to his knees and ankles.
The man, from Ropes Crossing, was arrested and taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for assessment and treatment.
His injuries were non-life-threatening.
He was discharged into police custody on Wednesday where he was taken to Day Street Police Station.
The man was charged with two counts of damage property by fire.
He was refused bail and will appear at Central Local Court today (Thursday February 28).
