Adora Fertility opens bulk-billing IVF clinic in Surry Hills
Jae and Brian Kim had given up on having children for six long years, but finally have their ‘miracle’ baby after discovering a one of the only bulk-billing fertility clinics in Australia.
Couples trying desperately for children through IVF have traditionally had to stump up tens of thousands of dollars for the chance of having a baby of their own.
But a new fertility clinic in Surry Hills is slashing treatment costs to less than $1000, as one of the only centres in the country to bulk-bill almost every appointment and procedure.
Eastwood couple Jae and Brian Kim, clients of Adora Fertility, lost hope of having a child for six long years.
Ms Kim, who had been diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome, couldn’t fall pregnant and a year of intra-uterine insemination in 2013 delivered disappointment after disappointment.
“We sort of gave up on having children at that point,” the 39-year-old said.
“Nothing was working. Every time when I went to do a blood test, it failed one after the other. It was exhausting.”
After years of waiting, a friend recommended the Kims explore IVF treatment.
Ms Kim researched “basically all the IVF places I could fin” and settled on Adora Fertility, which moved from its former George St clinic to a three-level facility on Foveaux St last month, as it was the only one that offered a fully bulk-billed cycle.
Now their “miracle” three-month-old baby boy Louis lights up their lives, and they are planning to soon try for a second.
“Financially it was a big burden to find thousands of dollars for the treatment,” she said.
“We were certainly grateful. Otherwise we wouldn’t have a child.”
Adora Fertility bulk-bills all Medicare-eligible expenses such as consultations, blood tests, ultrasound scans and fertility procedures.
Its Sydney medical director Dr Paul Atkinson said clients were typically $1100 out of pocket for a full cycle — if they don’t have private health cover — after paying for the anaesthetist and surgery.
People travelled from regional NSW towns including Batemans Bay, Dubbo and the Central Coast to access the clinic’ low-cost treatment, he said.
“Basically anything that can be bulk-billed is bulk-billed,” he said. “It makes the job a lot more enjoyable for me.
“We also see a lot of people just struggling with the cost of living in Sydney, reasonably well-paid professionals who are trying to balance a mortgage.”
Adora’s NSW clinic started in 2014 and has helped in the conception of 2500 babies since.
It moved from near Town Hall to Surry Hills because it “outgrew” its old space, Dr Atkinson said.
