Wyong: 10 townhouse proposal for derelict double block on Margaret St

A pair of derelict blocks in the heart of Wyong — opposite The Art House — are earmarked for townhouses as developers see value in the once maligned suburb.

Confidence among buyers still high

Dozens of development applications (DAs) have been lodged in and around Wyong with the suburb poised to boast hundreds of new dwellings, should they be granted approval, over the next few years.

A proposal to knock down two derelict cottages on adjoining blocks at 34-36 Margaret St to make room for 10 new townhouses is the latest in a series of DAs lodged for Wyong.

Approval has already been granted to demolish the two existing old cottages and their respective fibro garages on the blocks which have a total combined area of 2023sq m.

Under the plans eight three-bedroom, two-storey townhouses would be built on the site – across the road from The Art House – along with two single-storey two-bedroom townhouses.

“With a mix of 2 and 3 bedroom townhouses, it provides flexibility in living and lifestyle for a range of residents,” the DA states.

“This proposal will enhance the residential amenity of the area and will also provide shared spaces for residents of the site to enjoy the location. Through the amalgamation of two lots, it provides well designed medium density housing.”

The proponents, listed in property documents as Shyamsundar and Manjakkuppam Stinivasan, state the townhouses supports the “increase in residential type and number” expected in Wyong over the next decade.

Around the corner, at 27 Anzac Ave, a DA has been lodged to knock down an existing house and construct six units while across the train tracks at 18 Warner Ave, a proposal has been lodged with council to build six four-bedroom dwellings.

The 1265sq m site, which backs onto the car park of Wyong Public Pool, is nearly half the size of the Margaret St townhouse proposal.

Meanwhile a DA has been lodged to knock down a further two homes on Jennings Rd to make way for a 16-unit subdivision.

The DA is a scaled-down version of an earlier application for a 35-unit residential flat building which was approved in 2016 and remains active.

Under the new plans numbers 12 and 14 Jennings Rd would be demolished and in their place would be five three-storey multi-dwelling buildings housing 16 units over basement parking.

It comes after plans were lodged last year for a 28-room, three storey shop top boarding house a few doors down on Jennings Rd next two Wyong High School.

The DA seeks to knock down a dilapidated weatherboard house on the 877sq m site and build a three-storey, 28-room boarding house with a ground floor shop and basement parking for 16 cars.

While detached housing is giving way to units and higher density living in the heart of Wyong, there are plans for more than 110 standalone homes off Alison Rd if two separate rezoning applications are approved.

The first application is to rezone a 20.9ha block of land into 57 residential lots ranging in size from 450sq m to 135,630sq m.

The second subdivision is for a 12.6ha parcel of land adjoining the western side of the first site and proposes to have 56 homes built on lots ranging from 450sq m to 1,074sq m.

All the applications remain with Central Coast Council for assessment.
