A FRESH contender has emerged for the title of world’s dumbest vandal after a man kicked in the sliding glass doors of Gosford police station.

Police allege Luke Matthew Hainsworth was drunk when he stepped out in front of traffic on Mann St before climbing onto the roof of a vehicle which was forced to stop about 10pm on Monday.

Police will allege the 33-year-old from Adamstown jumped on the roof causing it to crumple downwards towards the elderly couple inside.

As a 69-year-old male occupant of the car tried to get out police allege Hainsworth kicked the door shut injuring the man’s hand.

Hainsworth was arrested at the scene and taken to Gosford police station where he was issued a future court attendance notice for common assault, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and damaging property.

About two-and-a-half hours later, Hainsworth returned to Gosford police station armed with a large sandstone rock where he proceeded to kick the automatic sliding glass door causing it to smash.

He was arrested and refused bail to appear at Gosford Local Court yesterday where he pleaded guilty to one count of recklessly destroying property.

Facts tendered to court reveal two women who were in the police foyer at the time had to cower in the corner after the glass smashed and the steel door frame buckled.

“This has caused an extremely loud bang and the glass to shatter,” the facts read.

“There were two female members of the public standing at the front counter at the time.

“The accused was yelling loudly and holding his right arm out to the side with the rock in his hand.

“The females at the counter began screaming and ran cowering a short distance away.”

Hainsworth was so aggressive police could not safely fingerprint him or take his photo, so they successfully sought a court order that he return to the station to do those at a later date.

While it was never going to end well for him, Hainsworth may have had the last laugh at taxpayers’ expense.

He was convicted, put on a 12-month good behaviour bond and fined just $500 for causing $2000 damage to the door, court papers revealed.

A sheepish Hainsworth emerged barefoot from court after his wild night on the booze in a ripped shirt and shorts.

He will be back to face his other matters at a future date.
