Two young men charged with street racing after a horror smash at West Gosford have faced court for the first time.

Both men were charged with dangerous and aggravated dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, driving furiously 45km/h over the limit, negligent driving and engaging in a street race.

The charges came after emergency services were called to the Central Coast Highway near the intersection of Hely St, at West Gosford, shortly after 11am on December 10 last year.

When Brisbane Water Police arrived they found a black VW station wagon and a Nissan X-Trail SUV had collided.

Police allege a third car, a VW GTI Golf, was seen driving in the area at the time of the crash.

The 85-year-old driver of the X-Trail suffered serious injuries when his vehicle rolled several times and came to rest against a bus stop.
