The Entrance: 7-Eleven stabber Jaxon Dean Wells sentenced

One of three men charged over a pre-dawn brawl at The Entrance 7-Eleven had 20 standard drinks and cocaine before he stabbed the victim, a court has heard.

How did COVID-19 lower crime rates?

A man has been sentenced for stabbing a man twice in the chest, including “nicking” a major artery, during a “terrifying attack” at The Entrance 7-Eleven nearly two years ago.

Jaxon Dean Wells, 20, formerly of Chittaway Point, faced Gosford District Court on Friday after pleading guilty to one count of wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The court heard the apprentice electrician, who has since moved in with his girlfriend at Oran Park in Sydney’s south west, had consumed 20 standard drinks and cocaine in the day leading up to the brawl and had no memory of actually stabbing the victim, which left Wells “shocked” after watching it on CCTV.

An agreed set of facts state Wells had attended the 7-Eleven about 4am on October 5, 2020, with two other men and two women to purchase Red Bull and other soft drinks to mix with their alcohol.

The victim, 28, had refuelled his car and was waiting to be served at the counter when he became engaged in a verbal altercation with Christopher Staines, then 19, of Berkeley Vale.

Wells ran outside to Robert George Ronald Dick, 20, of Berkeley Vale, who was relieving himself in a garden bed and asked Dick for a small folding pocket knife.

The pair then went into the store with Wells “concealing an object in his shorts”.

Facts stated that the victim and Staines had a heated exchange before the victim tried to defuse the situation by saying “sorry mate, all good. I’m leaving”.

He went to the counter to pay and was approached by Wells and Mr Dick, the facts stated.

“Ah you guys are all together are you?” the victim said.

Wells replied “what c**t” and produced the knife. The victim replied “I’m not scared mate” before calling one of the females a “mutt”.

The facts stated that Mr Dick allegedly punched the man in the face and Wells “lunged towards the complainant and swung the knife towards the upper left side of his chest”.

“As a result the complainant felt immediate pain and knew he had been stabbed,” the facts stated.

Mr Dick allegedly kicked the victim’s upper body before the victim tackled him to the ground and Wells stabbed him a second time under the left arm.

The victim started to throw objects at the men before they left.

An ambulance was called and the victim was taken to John Hunter Hospital with “immediate life threatening injuries” requiring emergency surgery.

He suffered two stab wounds, one of which “nicked” an artery and he lost up to one litre of blood.

“Those facts clearly disclose very serious objective criminality,” Judge Tanya Bright said.

“This was a terrifying attack on a member of the community with a knife. It has had significant consequences for the victim who’s life has been substantially impacted by the subsequent psychological harm caused. There is no place for such behaviour in a civilised society.”

Judge Bright sentenced Wells to two years and seven months jail with a non-parole period of one year and three months to expire on June 10, 2023.

The court heard Staines had previously pleaded guilty to one count of affray and was sentenced in Wyong Local Court to a community corrections order for 18 months while Mr Dick has pleaded not guilty to wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He will face trial at Gosford District Court at a future date.
