Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the granny flat fire which killed a man and his dog in Woy Woy on Tuesday night.
Police have indicated that they have formally identified the man who was aged 42.
The Express understands the second dog, who escaped the fire, is being cared for by the man’s friend.
Many residents of Terry Ave woke to the news on Wednesday that the man’s body was located inside a granny flat which burst into flames.
Brisbane Water Police District’s Detective Inspector Paul Laksa said NSW Fire and Rescue were called to the granny flat behind a home following reports of a fire about 11.40pm on Tuesday night.
“Unfortunately during further investigations a deceased male has been located,” he said.
“Investigators are currently conducting inquiries into the cause and origin of the fire.”
Det Insp Laksa said the granny flat was being occupied by a male who was living alone with his two dogs.
“Our inquiries have revealed there is one deceased dog,” he said.
In terms of any suspicious circumstances, Det Insp Laksa said. “I would say at this point in time there’s nothing obvious that stands out to us”.
A crime scene was established and forensic investigators from NSW Police and Fire and Rescue remained at the site on Wednesday. Officers were seen removing a number of items including what appeared to be a bag of burnt wires.
A Fire and Rescue ignitable liquid detection dog was also on scene to carry out searches of the granny flat.
The Express spoke to a number of neighbours who said they didn’t know about the tragedy until they woke this morning. The granny flat is at the rear of the property and out of sight from the street.
“It’s just so sad,” one neighbour said.
He said he knew that a man lived in the granny flat, however “he kept to himself”.
A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
