A Central Coast teenager with a suspended license has been accused of speeding “excessively” and “dangerously” 60km/h over the speed limit on the M1 Motorway before his vehicle slammed into a rock wall seriously injuring his female passenger, a court has heard.

Kyle Richardson, 18, from Canton Beach was behind the wheel of a blue Volkswagon Golf on Monday morning.

He was travelling south when he allegedly lost control, causing the car to rotate and collide with the rock wall.

The vehicle rotated a second time and collided again with the rock wall causing the front wheels and engine to separate from the car.

Richardson was able to free himself from the wreckage but a female friend in the front seat, also 18, remained trapped.

It took time for emergency services to release her before she was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital with serious leg and abdominal injuries and underwent emergency surgery.

She remains in hospital in a serious condition.

The vehicle was seized for forensic examination by the Crash Investigation Unit.

Richardson has been charged with two counts of dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm while speeding and driving in a manner dangerous, negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm and drive while suspended.

In Newcastle Local Court on Tuesday, Richardson appeared via video link, seemingly unfazed by the proceedings, where his solicitor Andrew Sant made an application for bail.

“Having been in custody for the past 24 hours, that itself is a deterrent to take this seriously,” Mr Sant told the court.

“The realisation of the seriousness has hit home with my client.”

Mr Sant said Richardson would comply with strict bail conditions which included a curfew, not occupying the driver’s seat of a motor vehicle and reporting to police.

But the prosecution opposed bail and said there was no reference as to why this crash occurred which resulted in an innocent member of the public being seriously injured.

“The accused was at the time suspended from driving a motor vehicle, but that wasn’t a deterrence,” he said.

Magistrate Sharon Crews told the court it was a strong prosecution case with witnesses and dashcam evidence.

“What guarantee is there that the community is safe when there is no explanation for this offending,” Magistrate Crews added.

“Will It happen again?

“I think the acceptable risk can’t be mitigated by the bail proposed.”

Bail was refused for the matter to head to Gosford Local Court later this month.

Following the crash, police are also appealing for additional witnesses and dashcam vision.
