Pictures: Central Coast finish third at NSW Country Rugby women’s sevens champs at Woy Woy

Plenty of spectators were on hand to appreciate the talent at the NSW Country Rugby women’s sevens champs at Woy Woy.

A shock loss on Sunday morning ended Central Coast’s hopes of taking out the NSW Country Rugby Women’s Sevens Championships, held at Woy Woy Oval.

The hosts had already lost their opening match by a goal to defending champions Newcastle Hunter on Saturday and were up 10-0 over Central North on Sunday morning, before being run down 19-10 by the eventual finalists.

“I thought we had a good enough team to make the final but a few things cost us,” Central Coast co-coach Michael Burgess said.

The Central Coast finished in third place after beating Western Plains in their playoff.

Best for the Central Coast was Elise Conolly, whose strong runs all weekend and multiple tries saw her named in the NSW Country Dream Team.

Burgess said Conolly’s game has “really come along”.

“She scored a couple of nice tries and has a fair bit of pace out wide,” he said.

Conolly was well supported by Taylah Welsh, Prue Bright and Holly Johnstone.

Burgess said a large part of the sevens squad would be part of the Central Coast side to contest the 15-a-side NSW Country women’s championships later in the year.

“It wasn’t the result we were hoping for after last year (losing the final) but we’ll take some good out of it and work on the areas that let us down,” Burgess said.
