MARINERS attacker Andrew Hoole was forced to endure last Saturday’s 5-1 loss to the Newcastle Jets from the stands. And, he was as shocked as anyone to witness the drubbing.
“It was definitely a shock to everyone involved at the club. Our recent pre-season results have been very good. It was a heavy defeat,” Hoole told the Express Advocate.
“It was very hard to miss the first game especially against my old club and it being a derby.
“I’m definitely looking forward to getting back on the pitch this weekend.”
Hoole missed the match due to a suspension that carried over from last season, but he’s set to feature on Saturday against the Western Sydney Wanderers.
The new recruit says his side will put the shock result behind them.
“We need to focus on our next match and we just need to believe in ourselves,” he said.
“We don’t need to panic at this stage. It’s only one game.”
On a positive note for the yellow and navy, was the performance of some of the new additions, including goal scorer Asdrubal.
“Those new signings were at a good level in the first match,” Hoole said.
“They are only going to get better with games under their belt. I’m sure those new signings can help us throughout the season.”
Hoole joined the Mariners on a two-year deal in May, and he said the move to Gosford had been an easy transition to make.
“Everyone has been very welcoming at the club. I’d been there one week and it felt like I’d been there for six months,” he said.
“The last year for me has been pretty frustrating, so it’s good to be in this team now and it’s looking positive … although we didn’t have a great start, I am looking forward to the second round.”
The Wanderers kicked off their campaign with a 2-1 win over Perth Glory, and Hoole is expecting a tough contest on Saturday.
“They were quite good. It will be a good test for us mentally and physically to see where we are at and I think it will be a good game.”
Kick-off is at 5.35pm Saturday at Spotless Stadium.
