AUSTRALIA’S Olympic gold medal winning women’s rugby sevens side is currently in town for the Central Coast Sevens tournament, which starts on Friday at Wyong Leagues Club.
Dominique Du Toit was one of the Aussie stars that celebrated success in Rio last year, and she’s set to feature at the annual international rugby event this weekend.
“I was a travelling reserve but to go to Rio was an absolutely incredible moment for women’s rugby, the growth of the game has just been excellent,” Du Toit said.
“We’re hoping that we can come and continue to promote the game. We’ve still got nine girls from that Olympic team in our squad now.
“We’re looking great. We just had some trial games against New Zealand. We haven’t named our team yet, but we’re looking really good at training.”
The UON Central Coast Sevens is considered as one of the most difficult competitions to win, with a high standard of premier domestic, international and club teams attending the event each year.
Du Toit said she hopes to see spectators turn out in numbers and experience the family friendly atmosphere of rugby sevens.
“It’s just a great game to come and watch especially on the Central Coast. There’s so much talent in the men’s and women’s comps,” she said.
“It’s a great opportunity to come and see what Sevens is about with the atmosphere and the family vibe of the game, and see some high quality rugby on display.”
