In a bizarre outburst outside court, the man dubbed the “playboy rapist” of Sydney’s eastern suburbs has told reporters he plans to appeal a sexual-assault conviction for which he served 9½ years jail.
Simon Monteiro was jailed for 12 years with a non-parole period of seven years and nine months for bashing and raping a woman in Bellevue Hill home in 2008 who he threatened to “gut her dad like a fish”.
The 51-year-old was released on parole on February 4 last year on the condition he abide by strict conditions including wearing an ankle bracelet and undergoing drug and alcohol testing, and psychological counselling.
Monteiro was also banned from visiting the council areas of Randwick City, Waverley and Woollahra.
During his time in jail Monteiro continued to attract headlines with his lofty demands for a raw vegetable diet, a jail by the sea, special mattress and a soft toothbrush.
Before his release a petition with more than 40,000 signatures called for the State Parole Authority to keep him behind bars.
Last month Brisbane Water Police took out an interim apprehended violence order (AVO) against Monteiro on behalf of his estranged brother Brett Lowe.
Monteiro faced Gosford Local Court today where he was also charged with one count of intimidating Mr Lowe on March 30.
Police today also sought to vary the interim AVO to include Mr Lowe’s partner Panunas Bynbamroong and a distance clause that he not go within 2km of them.
Representing himself, Monteiro opposed the interim orders telling the court his brother had ensconced some “work benches” on their father’s rural property at Somersby and the variations would prevent him from visiting the farm to mow the lawns for his elderly dad.
He also told the court his brother was “bullying” their father.
The former model and aspiring actor — who changed his name from Simon Lowe — was dubbed the “playboy rapist” because he boasted of his modelling work and claimed to have dated Hollywood star Barbara Hershey.
Magistrate Daniel Reiss had to reprimand Monteiro several times for talking over the top of him and not answering questions but instead going off on tangent.
At one point Mr Reiss asked “is there any mental health issues I have to take note of?”.
Monteiro took offence and described the question as “an insult”.
Mr Reiss said it was not intended to be an insult but insisted “there has been a few things that are unusual” with his behaviour in court.
The court heard Monteiro was still on parole for sexual assault and was still wearing his electronic ankle bracelet.
Outside court Monteiro said he wanted to set the record straight.
“I just want to say this, I will be appealing the sexual assault conviction shortly in the Supreme Court,” he said.
“There are no 11 victims that you keep chirping on about when you trying to get me bashed in prison, otherwise I’d be serving 135 years wouldn’t I?
“There’s a statement that the complainant, not the victim, made where she said she told Gordon Wood, that Gordon Wood, she threatened to set me up with rape. It was never ever used in court, I shouldn’t have been convicted and I will have that conviction overturned.”
