A mother of two young boys may never recover from the life-threatening “blunt force trauma” injuries she sustained in a terrifying home invasion.
That was the heartfelt message of the woman’s younger brother who bravely faced the media on Wednesday to appeal for information about his sister’s brutal attack.
Tuggerah Lakes police officers were called to Walmsley Rd at Ourimbah about 10.20am on Monday, July 3, following “a concern for welfare report”, where they found a woman, in her 30s, with critical head wounds.
“A woman was found unresponsive with serious injuries, and flown to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition,” police said in a statement at the time.
The 33-year-old woman, identified only by her hyphenated first name Sara-Jane, has spent the past fortnight clinging to life in hospital where police have been unable to speak to her because of the extent of her injuries.
Her younger brother Jake spoke at a press conference at Wyong police station, saying Sara-Jane was brutally attacked in her home.
“She’s still in ICU and may never fully recover from the severe injuries that have left her disabled,” he said.
“Whoever did this to her is still out there, we have a close-knit community in Ourimbah and our family are hoping the public may have seen anything involving something from that night or morning. We are seeking you help to find this person, or people, who have tried to take my sister’s life.”
Tuggerah Lakes Superintendent Chad Gillies said police have “no motive” for the attack and believe it may have occurred sometime overnight Sunday or before she was found by her flatmate who arrived home on the Monday morning and called triple-0.
Supt Gillies said Sara-Jane’s flatmate, 48, was interviewed by police but was “not considered a suspect” in the investigation.
He said Sara-Jane suffered “blunt force trauma” injuries and described the crime scene where her body was found inside the unit was as “confronting” for police.
“Due to the nature of the injuries we are treating this at the highest end,” he said.
“There was no forced entry to the unit.”
Supt Gillies said police believe Sara-Jane may have known who assaulted her in what he described as a “cowardly and brutal” attack.
He said police were confident they would speak to Sara-Jane once her condition improved but in the meantime urged anyone with information to come forward.
Supt Gillies said anyone who knew the identity of the culprits, or any further details, but was withholding information could be charged with an offence and would face “the full force of the law”.
Sara-Jane’s family said she was the mother of two young boys but they were not at the unit at the time.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Crimestoppers: 1800 333 000.
