Construction has officially begun on the new $39.5 million primary school at Warnervale, which was on Tuesday been named Porters Creek Public.
NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian visited the site at 75 Warnervale Rd on Tuesday to unveil the name and turn the first sod with Terrigal State Liberal MP Adam Crouch and indigenous Gorokan High School Year 12 student Jock Clenton.
“I’m proud that the NSW Government is delivering Porters Creek Public School, a new public primary school for 500 local students with plenty of room for future growth,” Ms Berejiklian said.
“I’m delighted to be here today to celebrate construction getting underway and I share the local community’s excitement about this very important project.”
Porters Creek Public School will provide 20 new permanent airconditioned classrooms, as well as a library, hall, canteen, administration facilities, a drop-off and pick-up zone and an Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) service.
Ms Berejiklian said depending on weather and other factors the school would be complete by late next year with the first enrolment of students in Term 1 of 2022.
Mr Crouch said the school would be “future proofed” to accommodate up to 1000 students.
“Planning approval and construction of this new school has been fast-tracked as part of the NSW Government’s Planning System Acceleration Program,” Mr Crouch said.
“The construction phase will deliver 225 jobs and $38 million to the economy, which is a big boost for our local economy at this difficult time.
“Given the difficulties that COVID-19 has created, it’s vital that the NSW Government push ahead with job-creating opportunities, including the construction of Porters Creek Public School.”
The former Warnervale Public School was opened on this site in 1958 and was in use until 2008 when the school moved to its current school on the corner of Warnervale and Minnesota roads.
The existing plans are for a single storey administration building, a hall, library, canteen and 20 permanent classrooms in two double storey blocks.
It will also feature two special education classrooms, two special programs rooms, an upper and lower playground, mini soccer field and carparking for 46 vehicles.
According to its environmental impact statement the project is expected to cost $39,489,256 including GST — so long as no unforeseen delays or bad weather blows out the cost.
