A FIRE which tore through a childcare centre at Mangrove Mountain this morning is believed to have started in an administration office.
Rural Fire Service (RFS) crews were called to Mountain Community Children’s Centre at 5.15am after cleaners arrived to find one of two buildings alight.
The cleaners called Triple 0 and RFS crews from Mangrove Mountain, Kulnura, Kariong and Narara attended a short tie later.
Firefighters battled the blaze for some time before it was eventually extinguished.
A RFS spokesman said the centre suffered extensive damage in the fire with the repair costs expected to run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
He said two classrooms inside one of the main buildings were severely damaged with initial investigations indicating the fire first broke out in an adjacent office.
RFS fire investigators and NSW Police Force forensic officers will remain at the scene for several hours as they work to determine the exact cause of the blaze.
The childcare centre will remain closed until further notice.
