NICK Montgomery has achieved a lot in his career, and now the former Central Coast Mariners captain can add another title to his resume, wedding saviour.
Montgomery was expecting a normal trip home two weeks ago when he borrowed the club’s van to move some furniture to his house, but that wasn’t the case.
He came across an accident on the narrow bends outside Central Coast Grammar School at Erina Heights, where three men were standing to the side of the road next to a badly damaged wedding car in heavy rain.
Things had turned disastrous for groom Tom Jervis and his two groomsmen Chris and Jackson, who were now running late for his big day.
The trio were left stranded with no way of getting to the ceremony at a winery in Holgate on time, until Montgomery emerged to save the day.
According to Jervis, Mariners supporter Jackson was in disbelief when he first realised it was the Championship-winning midfielder who had come to their aid.
“My groomsman Jackson was the first one to recognise ‘Monty’ when he jumped out of the Mariners van,” Jervis said.
Montgomery said he was unsure of what had actually unfolded when he first discovered the car, but was more than happy to play the role of wedding car driver.
“I saw a damaged classic car near a tree outside the Grammar School and it looked like there had been an accident,” Montgomery told the Express Advocate.
“There was a wedding party standing to the side of the road, and at first I was a bit confused as to what had happened.
“When I saw the damage to the car I turned around and went to help. They were really grateful that I was able to give them a lift.
“I guess it was just good timing that I drove past when I did. It was a bit surprising that no one else had stopped to make sure they were all right.
“They were Mariners fans too, so luckily they made it to the wedding in the end and it’s a good story for them to tell.”
Jervis thanked Montgomery for rescuing his big day.
“If it wasn’t for him stopping on the side of the road to pick us up, we wouldn’t have made it.”
“On behalf of myself and my new wife, we would like to say a huge thank you to Nick for saving our wedding.”
Jervis and his wife Sharon are currently away on their honeymoon, but Montgomery said he looks forward to welcoming the newlyweds to a match at Central Coast Stadium this season.
