A man has faced court after he allegedly jumped into the water at Lake Macquarie in a desperate attempt to evade police.
Matthew Craig Dick, of Watanobbi, appeared via video link at Wyong Local Court where his solicitor did not apply for bail and it was formally refused.
Officers from Tuggerah Lakes Police District went to a home on Mariam St, Mannering Park, about 11.20am on Wednesday to arrest the 33-year-old on alleged outstanding warrants.
When police arrived they allegedly saw Dick run from the home and jump over a back fence.
Police will allege in court officers chased after him as he ran onto the jetty at Mannering Park and jumped into the lake.
Officers also jumped in the water and swam after him as a PolAir helicopter assisted in locating him.
Within ten minutes police managed to get Mr Dick to shore and arrested him.
He was searched and police allegedly found more than $1100 cash and a crystal substance which they allege turned out to be methylamphetamine.
He was taken to Wyong Police Station and charged with several offences including possessing a prohibited drug, possessing a prohibited weapon and drugs on April 27 at Tuggerah and failing to appear at Wyong Local Court on May 26.
He was also charged with intentionally damaging property on May 27 at Norah Ave, Charmhaven, with the intent to endanger the life of a man and a woman, and the aggravated robbery of a man’s wallet containing about $800 at Wyong on May 6.
Charge sheets in relation to that offence allege Dick at the time “used corporal violence on the said victim intentionally inflicted actual bodily harm”.
Dick was adjourned to August 17.
