Karen Farmer has just returned from Hawaii where she “ticked off a lot of bucket list items” including abseiling, zip-lining and swimming with manta rays.
But she could never have dreamt of that 12 months ago when she tipped the scales at 120kg.
“I work in retail so I’m on my feet all day,” she said.
“I hurt my knee and my doctor said if you don’t lose weight you’re going to have a lot of problems.”
The mother-of-four set about swapping carbohydrates for salads and began spending 40 minutes to an hour on a treadmill every day.
“It slowly fell off,” she said.
“It was no fad diet, just grilled chicken, sweet potato and salad.”
Ms Farmer said she used to eat Subway every day thinking it was a healthy option until she realised how much bread and sugar was in her favourite subs.
“Even now if I have bread I fall asleep,” she said.
“I think I may have been a little allergic to it.”
In less than 12 months Ms Farmer shed an incredible 42kg and has kept it off “easily”.
“I have my doughnut every week, I still have my naughty stuff,” she said.
The 42-year-old agreed to share her story to inspire others who might think shedding the flab is a bridge too far.
“I couldn’t believe it fell off so quickly,” she said.
“I had a look at (an old photograph) and went `whoa, f...!’ it was quite shocking.”
At 78kg Ms Farmer said she wants to get down to 75kg and start hitting the gym to get toned.
“I feel so much better, I have a lot more energy, more get up and go,” she said.
“My kids are really impressed. My advice is just don’t give up. I think the message is you don’t need to go on all these fad diets.
“I did it for myself, for me it was something I had to do medically for my knee but now I feel so much better.”
Dropping from a size 24 to a size 12, Ms Farmer is literally half her size and it’s meant a “whole new wardrobe, which sucks because I hate shopping”.
“Customers come in and they may have seen me last year and now they’re saying `where have you gone?’,” she said.
