Fold down tray tables and room for luggage are just two of the features that will have local train travellers rejoicing when state of the art new intercity trains come on line next year.
Parliamentary Secretary for the Central Coast Scot MacDonald joined Liberal upper house MP Taylor Martin and Terrigal State Liberal MP Adam Crouch were given a sneak peek inside the flash new trains during a tour yesterday.
The train model that was viewed is currently being tested with users who have specific needs such as disability groups, travellers with luggage and parents with prams whose feedback will be used to modify the design where needed.
A brochure handed out said users were “experiencing the new train in a full-scale model representing one and a half double decker carriages fitted out with the intended features.”
“The use of the model is an important step in the project as it allows us to refine the design to ensure we deliver the best possible train fleet for our customers,” it said.
The New Intercity Fleet will also include a range of new and better on-board technology that improves safety, such as CCTV cameras, customer help points, and alarms.
The Automatic Selective Door Operation ensures only the correct doors open at each platform.
Internal emergency door release, a robust structure, fire detection technology, fire resistant materials, better lighting, vandal resistant equipment and surfaces, fault diagnosis technology and access to real time information are also included.
About 100,000 customers are expected to travel on the new trains during peak periods across the network.
1050 passagners will be carried per eight car train and 1312 for a ten car train.
More than 500 carriages are being built.
