POLICE are investigating a suspected arson attack at Crackneck Lookout on one of the hottest days of the year and ahead of the southerly buster last night.

Emergency services were called to the popular lookout at 6.37pm to find an area of about 60sq m of grass alight on the side of the headland.

Fire & Rescue NSW’s Bateau Bay crews arrived, along with a Rural Fire Service tanker, and extinguished the blaze without incident a short time later at 7.16pm.

The fire burned an area of about 60sq m.

The top car park was evacuated and National Parks and Wildlife staff patrolled the area overnight to ensure there were no flare-ups.

A police spokesman said witnesses had provided “some information to police” including a registration number of a car and a description of a few people seen in the area just prior to the fire breaking out.

Anyone with information is urged to contact CrimeStoppers.

P-PLATE DRIVER BUSTED SPEEDING ON M1

Meanwhile in an unrelated incident, a P2 driver has had his licence suspended on the spot after being clocked travelling 137km/h on the M1 motorway in his mum’s Toyota Yaris.

Police patrolling the motorway detected the driver about 6am yesterday travelling south at Mardi.

They later pulled the 23-year-old, of Canton Beach, over and suspended his licence for a minimum mandatory period of three months.

He was also issued a fine in excess of $800 and faces further infringements for allegedly failing to display his P-plates.

As a P2 or “green” P-plate driver he is limited to 100km/h.
