A 45-year-old man did not apply for bail on Friday when he faced Wyong Local Court charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent on a neighbour.

David Michael Guest did not say anything when his matter was mentioned briefly, with his private solicitor Rose Evers not applying for bail.

Police will allege in court Mr Guest approached a 62-year-old neighbour in Huene Ave, Halekulani, about 6.20pm on Thursday and hit him multiple times in the head with a sledgehammer.

The elderly victim sustained serious injuries and was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a critical but stable condition.

He was expected to undergo emergency surgery on Friday.

Tuggerah Lakes Police attended and arrested Mr Guest nearby.

He was taken to Wyong Police Station where he was charged with cause grievous bodily harm to a person with intent.

He was also charged with breaching a personal apprehended violence order on January 26.

Police refused Mr Guest bail to appear at court on Friday where his matter was adjourned until April 5.

The court heard he had other, unrelated, matters before the same court on February 23 and these were adjourned to coincide with his appearance in April.
