PUBLIC debate over the long-awaited Regional Performing Arts Centre in Gosford has resurfaced this week.

Questions have been raised about what stage the highly anticipated centre is at and whether the centre will be built at all.

It has been more than two years since the Federal Government kicked in the final $10 million to fund the centre, which already had $12 million from the State Government and $10 million from the former Gosford Council.

Since then, the burning question has been where will the $32 million facility be built?

Robertson federal Liberal MP Lucy Wicks is meeting with council staff and members of the local arts community this week to listen to the latest plans for the centre.

“The Performing Arts Centre must be placed so that it can help rejuvenate and inspire Gosford,” she said.

“It’s always been the responsibility of Central Coast Council to decide the exact location, and this remains the case.

“The Federal Coalition Government has committed $10 million towards this project, and we are determined to see a world class, iconic venue that delivers a beating ‘cultural heart’ to our city.”

Last year, Central Coast Council, under Administration, selected the Central Coast Leagues Club field as its preferred site.

Central Coast Coordinator General Lee Shearer questioned the site this week and told the ABC the green space was highly utilised.

“I feel that park is terribly important, I know the government architect feels it’s very important for green space,” she said.

She said the council will have to think long and hard about the location.

The Express has asked the council for an update on the proposed centre.
