When Central Coast Council decided to vacate the Kibbleplex car park on March 31 the site’s owner, The Lederer Group, stepped in to keep it and its 550 car spots open.
It contracted Interpark, an operator of secure car parks across NSW, to keep it open and maintain the car park.
But as of Wednesday the free parking comes to an end with The Lederer Group offering a nominal flat rate of $4 a day to cover its costs.
A spokeswoman said the company was disappointed with the council’s decision to cease leasing the site and close the car park so they offered to keep it open and keep people coming in to Gosford.
“We own the Imperial Centre as well so helping the CBD is in our best interest,” she said.
“We think $4 is quite reasonable.”
She said the rate was a lot less than motorists would find in Sydney and the boom gates would offer “cashless” payment by credit card.
The spokeswoman said the Imperial Centre still offered free parking for the first three hours and free parking on weekends, along with the $4 flat rate at Kibbleplex.
She said a lot of people didn’t realise council paid The Lederer Group to use it as a public car park and “that funding was cut unfortunately”.
The car park will remain open as per its current hours of 5.30am to 9.00pm, Monday to Friday.
