If you laid all the ingredients at Goodness Cakes on a table, it would look like a healthy platter.

But when Chantal and Ben Bakker get to work in the kitchen, those ingredients become decadent masterpieces.

Goodness Cakes is one of the best kept secrets on the coast, offering a “sweet alternative” with their gluten-free, sugar-free, dairy-free, keto and vegan treats.

The Bakkers have been running the cafe for the past year, quietly producing their amazing products and catering for birthdays, weddings and parties.

However the secret is out — the cakes, brownies, cheesecakes, dessert cakes and other glorious products are to die for.

The couple previously owned a chocolate cafe in New Zealand and always dreamt of opening another cafe. When they moved to Australia, they saw a need for somewhere to offer “sweets” for all diets.

Opening the cafe was also part of a personal journey for the couple who have changed their diets in the pursuit of having a family.

“Simple is what we are about,” Mrs Bakker said.

“Our focus is rustic, natural and healthy ingredients. We use edible flowers from Hidden Valley Harvest and doTERRA oils.

“I am a big believer that food is medicine. We meet so many people who want to treat themselves without having any side effects.”

We were treated to a selection of samples, starting with the most popular menu on the item — vegan chocolate brownie.

The soft, fudgy texture was incredible and enough to rival any of the sweetest brownies I’ve had.

If fruity cakes is more your style you can’t go past the soft lemon/blueberry cake which has an intense lemon hit. On to the frozen goods, and the bounty cheesecake was refreshingly divine.

Mr Bakker said the cafe had been years in the making, with the couple always passionate about cooking for family and friends.

“We have so many friends who are gluten free and they are often isolated from everyone else if there’s a cake at work or a party,” he said.

“Food should be used to bring everyone together, not separate people. It’s been an interesting journey. We have served our cakes to people without dietary needs, who love their sweets, and they loved it — didn’t even realise they were eating a vegan cake.”

Mrs Bakker said it’s a case of “watch this space” with Goodness Cakes set to join Uber Eats, offer do-it-yourself cake mixes and serve cake and ice cream cups.

The icing on the cake — there’s great coffee too.
