Federal Election 2020: Liberal and Labor parties promise $40m to fix Central Coast roads

Two days after the Liberals promised $40m to fix 60 Central Coast roads, Labor has come to the part with an election commitment of $40m to fix our roads. See the full list of roads.

Labor has matched the commitment of $40m to fix Central Coast roads.

The announcement comes two days after the Liberals committed the same amount of funding with a list of 60 roads identified for upgrade.

Dobell federal Labor MP Emma McBride and Robertson Labor candidate Dr Gordon Reid made the announcement on Friday, saying that the region had “some of the worst roads in NSW”.

“People on the Central Coast have been crying out for proper road investment for years,” Ms McBride said.

“We have people here who are avoiding driving at night or who are taking a different route to work because of potholes and other hazards. This investment will go a long way towards improving safety for motorists across the Coast.”

Catherine King, Shadow Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development, said according to the NRMA the Central Coast had the second highest number of call-outs to fix tyres and wheels in the state.

Dr Reid said coast roads had been neglected for too long.

“They are in desperate need of an upgrade. I’m proud to say a future Labor Government is committed to improving roads on the Central Coast so locals can get around quicker and safer,” he said.

“This $40 million investment will also ease congestion and save locals from damaging their cars because of crater-size potholes on our roads.”

Central Coast Council and local residents have helped create a list of 60 local roads first in line for major repairs.

Roads between Tuggerawong and Booker Bay, and across to Jilliby to Gunderman, have been identified including some of our most dangerous or flood prone roads such as Fagans Rd in Lisarow, Lakedge Ave, Berkeley Vale, Wisemans Ferry Rd, Gunderman and The Scenic Road through MacMasters, Killcare and Killcare Heights.

With the list complete, the Federal Government has promised, if re-elected, to upgrade the safety and quality of all 60 roads to the tune of $40m.

The funding will go to the council to support their works program, including road reconstruction, rehabilitation and resurfacing. It will also support the council’s current maintenance backlog created by recent weather and increased traffic.

“A strong economy means we continue to improve roads across the Central Coast, helping residents get home sooner and safer,” Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Wednesday.

“Continuing to provide record future funding for road and rail projects across Australia is a key part of our long-term economic plan to keep the economy strong.”

Robertson federal Liberal MP Lucy Wicks said she had worked with local residents and council to identify priority projects.

“Better local roads, particularly after the recent storms, is the number one issue raised with me and this funding will upgrade some of our worst roads across the Coast,” Ms Wicks said.

“Upgrading roads such as The Scenic Road through MacMasters Beach, Killcare and Killcare Heights, Rickard Road in Empire Bay and Rabaul Ave in Umina Beach will make life easier for so many people living on the Central Coast.”
