As Lucy Wicks relaxes on the beach with her two children, she reflects on the “extraordinary” election results and the personal challenges she has faced over the past few years.

Ms Wicks declared victory last night, retaining her position as Robertson federal Liberal MP for the third term, with a four per cent margin.

“I’m feeling really grateful and humble,” she told the Express.

“I am so glad to have the opportunity to continue to serve the people on the Central Coast.”

She said she knew it would be a close contest between rival Labor candidate Anne Charlton, and the results gave her a “tremendous sense of honour”.

“They threw everything at us and put in a very strong campaign,” she said.

“I pay tribute to each and every candidate. This has always been a marginal seat, but the only seat I have ever wanted to run for.

“I love it, the fact that not a single vote has ever been taken for granted.”

Ms Wicks said the past few years had been “incredibly challenging” on a personal level, as she tackles the challenge of being a single mum and overcomes a health scare.

“I have had significant personal challenges which I have kept private, and will one day share publicly,” she said.

“My job is about helping people with their struggles, not talking about my own.”

However, she said her experiences had helped her gain more resilience and empathy in her role as federal MP.

“I am able to better understand people and the impact that situations and difficulties can have.”

How did the Coalition win the unwinnable election?

She said it was an amazing feeling watching the Coalition’s victory with her dedicated team.

“Everyone was so invested, the team worked day and night and they didn’t let up,” she said.

“It was extraordinary to watch the seat count one by one. I said at the time that this will be one of the most significant choices for the next 10 years. I don’t think it was a decision that anyone took lightly.”

She said talking to people at polling stations showed they were interested in both local and national issues.

While Mrs Wicks hoped for a sleep in today, she said she was greeted with cuddles from her children Mollie-Joy and Oscar.

“They are really proud and excited,” she said.

“They take a real interest in politics and talk about policies and what everyone is saying. It’s a great thing to see.”

She is also keeping a close eye on the Dobell race, with fellow Liberal Jilly Pilon giving sitting Labor MP Emma McBride a tough contest.

“I think Jilly is extraordinary, she’s fearless and she is loved by everyone,” she said.
