In the northern Central Coast electorate of Dobell, Labor MP Emma McBride faced a spirited challenge from popular local councillor Jilly Pilon - but, it won’t be enough to prise the seat from the Labor Party.
Ms McBride will retain her seat despite registering a swing against her of slightly more than three per cent. She started the day with a margin of 4.8 per cent.
This will be Ms McBride’s second term in parliament.
Ms Pilon enjoys a significant local profile and sources told the Express Advocate she had polled well in the weeks leading up to the election.
But, with slightly more than 50 per cent of the total booths counted, Ms Pilon has managed to close McBride’s four per cent margin significantly.
Ms Pilon told the Express Advocate earlier today that for her to win would be a huge upset.
“You just never know,” she said at the time.
Ms McBride was not available for comment on Saturday night but a spokeswoman said: “We’re not calling it. We know the ABC have called it but we’re not calling it.”
Ms Pilon’s campaign provided a similar sentiment.
“We’re not conceding yet,” a spokesman said.
