A man charged with allegedly possessing more than 56kg of marijuana, steroids and $265,000 cash has a prescription for medical cannabis, a court has heard.

Appearing via video link from custody, Troy Woolley faced Gosford Local Court on Thursday where his solicitor Ljupka Subeska applied for bail.

Ms Subeska told the court the 38-year-old suffered from “several mental health issues” and had been seeing a doctor for “quite some time”.

She said Mr Woolley also had a prescription for medical cannabis — although she told the court she wasn’t suggesting the cannabis allegedly found at his Ettalong address was for medical purposes — and that he required a sleep apnoea machine, which he had not been given access to since his arrest a week ago.

Charge sheets tendered to court allege police attended Mr Woolley’s Ettalong Beach address on The Esplanade at 11.20am on Thursday, March 23, where they seized 56.24kg of cannabis.

Police also seized $265,000 in Australian currency, cocaine, methylamphetamine and four different steroids or human growth hormones.

Mr Woolley was charged with 12 offences including nine counts of possessing restricted substances and illicit drugs, supplying cannabis and dealing with the proceeds of crime.

Ms Subeska said her client would be willing to wear a monitoring bracelet and abide by “very strict” bail conditions that would effectively place him under “house arrest”.

Magistrate John McIntosh however said it appeared to be a “strong prosecution case” and Mr Woolley would more than likely receive a custodial sentence if he was convicted of the offences before the court.

He formally refused Mr Woolley bail to reappear via video link on May 19.
