A convicted murderer who tried to rig an Airbnb on the Central Coast with deadly booby traps reminiscent of Home Alone but far more sinister has been jailed.
Adam John Bohway, 47, was sentenced in Wyong Local Court on Monday after pleading guilty to destroying more than $2000 worth of property.
Police facts state Bohway had been staying at accommodation in Fountaindale on November 28 last year when he called triple-0 at 1.51am, claiming people were trying to break in and that he would burn the place down.
One minute later, he called again, stating he was “ready to electrocute the POIs.”
Police arrived a short time later, and Bohway told them two men were trying to break in through a window.
According to court documents, officers noted that Bohway was mumbling his words and while waiting in the driveway, police saw smoke coming from the Airbnb.
Rushing upstairs, they found a small bowl with ash on the kitchen table.
Officers poured water into the bowl and opened the windows to air out the premises.
Police then observed a toaster on the floor with water around it, a large bar heater in the hallway with its power cord cut, and a cord tied around a cupboard, keeping it shut.
Upon entering a bedroom, officers found metal poles placed against each door, seemingly as a warning system to alert if someone attempted to enter.
They also discovered two broken electrical meters, with wires twisted and attached to the aluminium window frame which was an apparent attempt to electrocute anyone trying to enter through the window.
Police removed the power point and displaced a broken lamp on the bedside table.
Officers also noticed several knives scattered across a picnic table and removed them.
In sentencing Magistrate Justin Peach described the offending as a “bizarre set of facts”.
The court heard Bohway was off his antipsychotic medications at the time and the offending occurred in the context of a mental health episode.
Bohway appeared by video link and was sentenced to three months jail and ordered to pay $2900 compensation.
Bohway was 18 when he killed a man he and his then 14-year-old girlfriend had met that night in the Oxford Hotel in Casino in the state’s north in 1997.
At his trial, Bohway had told the jury that he had no recollection of stabbing Steven Jarvis, a “helpless drunk’’ but when he saw the blood, he lost control.
He told police: “I didn’t know if he was dead or not proper – didn’t know if I had killed him good enough, so I jumped on his chest, jumped on his head, kicked him in the ribs. I just schitzed right out.’’
In February 2013 he escaped while on a work release program but he was found less than 30 kilometres from where he had left.
