Celebrated Australian singer songwriter Alex Lloyd approached a different microphone when he represented himself in court on Tuesday charged with driving on a suspended licence.
The 50-year-old, of Terrigal, faced Gosford Local Court under his given name Alexander Wasiliev and pleaded guilty to one count of driving while suspended.
The three-time ARIA Award winning Best Male Artist was invited down to the microphone at the end of the bar table where he told Magistrate Kirralee Perry he was seeking an adjournment to get legal advice and finish one more module in the traffic offenders program.
It comes after police were conducting random breath testing on Terrigal Dr at 8.55pm on February 4 when they directed Lloyd to pull over in his black Kia Sportage.
Police approached Lloyd, who was alone in the car, and asked for his licence.
An agreed set of facts states Lloyd told officers he was unable to produce it because he didn’t have his wallet on him.
He was asked if he had a digital driver’s licence but he said no.
“He was asked if his licence was suspended, disqualified or cancelled, to which he replied, ‘Err, I’m pretty sure I got it back today’,” the facts state.
“Checks on the accused revealed he was the holder of a NSW C-class Unrestricted drivers licence in the name of Alexander Wasiliev.
“The licence was currently endorsed as suspended from November 14, 2024, to February 13, 2025, for exceeding the speed by more than 30km/h.
“When advised his licence was suspended he stated ‘Shite, I actually thought it was this week I got my licence back’.”
When asked why he thought he got his licence back this week, he stated ‘My flatmate’.
More embarrassingly, further checks revealed Lloyd did have a digital driver’s licence on his phone and with “minimal prompting” he was able to open it to see it contained a large warning that the licence was “SUSPENDED”.
Lloyd will be sentenced on April 8.
