Con woman Aruna Gould to spend nine more months in jail

A con woman already serving three years and nine months jail has been given another nine months for ripping off yet another elderly man.

Con women plead guilty

One of two con women who befriended elderly men before fleecing them of their life savings will spend a further nine months behind bars.

Aruna Devi Gould, of Charlestown near Newcastle, was jailed in January to three years and nine months for ripping off two elderly men.

The 49-year-old faced another sentencing at Gosford District Court on Friday after pleading guilty to another charge of obtaining financial advantage by deception from a third man.

A set of agreed facts tendered to court revealed Gould met the 77-year-old man after she responded to an advertisement in the “meeting point” section of a senior’s newspaper.

They agreed to meet at Swansea RSL Club where they had a meal and she suggested they go back to his house at East Gosford.

“The victim and the offender were cuddling and touching each other, and were partially undressed,” the agreed police facts read.

“The victim was down to his underpants and the offender was touching his genitalia.”

Later the man drove her back to her car where she showed him a dent in the back of her white Toyota Rav 4.

Gould said it would cost her $700 to fix and asked him for the money “on the proviso that she would pay him back”.

“The victim and offender agreed to meet another time so that the victim could provide the requested sum to the offender. Following this the offender would frequently contact the victim, calling him on an almost daily basis and request that he provide her with sums of money.”

The offender requested money for various reasons including that she was moving to Ettalong, needed to have an operation on her vagina, that she was at St Vincents Hospital and while under anaesthetic she had money and jewellery stolen from her.

She also asked for money for more car repairs including brake linings and money for airfares between Queensland and Newcastle.

The victim paid Gould a total of $13,156, none of which has ever been returned.

“As a result of the volume of withdrawals that the victim was making, a staff member from his bank provided him with a notice warning about scammers, which had the offender’s name on it,” the facts read.

“The victim showed this to the offender who tore the notice into pieces and put it in the bin stating, ‘that’s not me’.”

She told him repeatedly: “Don’t tell anybody about us and what is happening”.

Gould was sentenced in Gosford District Court to two years and three months jail with a non-parole period of nine months.

Gould was also ordered to repay the victim $13,156.

It comes after she was sentenced in January to a maximum penalty of five years jail with a non-parole period of three years and nine months after pleading guilty to ripping off two elderly men she and her partner of 13 years, Maria Anne Virgili, had befriended to the tune of $51,900.

Virgili has pleaded guilty to two counts of fraud and will be sentenced in Gosford District Court next month.
