Hundreds of players and their families have been left stunned — and many out of pocket — after the sudden collapse of the Central Coast Waves Basketball association.

The first idea anything was underfoot came when Central Coast Waves posted a notice on its Facebook page yesterday morning cancelling its Ripples Miniball and the Skilz N Drilz programs.

A parent in contact with the Express Advocate said she then received an email last night advising that Basketball NSW had removed all Waves teams from its representative competitions because of “financial reasons”.

She said they were told this also meant all domestic competitions had been cancelled without further notice as well.

Waves director of coaching Karen Irwin took to social media to express her dissapointment.

“You would think I’d learn from last time about putting my heart and soul into something,” she wrote.

“Lost for words today. Absolutely shattered for the new Waves board who worked hard on getting us out of a massive sh*t fight by previous poor management, the whole Waves community from players, coaches, referees, parents, families, to all the domestic players especially for our grassroots kids in Ripples and Aussie Hoops. Absolutely shattered. It’s a sh*t day...”

Attempts to contact Ms Irwin or anyone from CC Waves have been unsuccessful.

Basketball NSW and its CEO Maria Nordstrom were also contacted for comment but neither have responded.

The lack of transparency has left a lot of parents frustrated with many taking to social media to blast the situation as an “absolute disgrace”.

“Yep I paid fees for the next comp over the weekend,” Jamie Bryen posted.

“Guessing I’ve lost that money. Bad form on their behalf taking the payment knowing this was coming.”

Others were quick to jump to the defence of the Waves’ board.

“I have seen first hand all that this new board have done to fight for our club. I know of the sleepless nights and the heavy burdens that they (volunteers might I add) have had to endure to try their hardest to save our club. Our current board should be commended for the efforts and the hours that they have given and sacrificed for our club, not torn down,” Rachael Kiernan wrote.

MORE TO COME.
