IN A region that boasts a number of beautiful beaches and ocean breaks as one of its greatest assets, it seems fitting that a man on a crusade to keep them clean makes our top 20.
Tim Silverwood, co-founder of the Coast-based not-for-profit organisation ‘Take 3’ for the Sea, is a leading advocate for the reduction of plastic waste in our water — so much so he has claimed the 18th spot on our countdown of the Central Coast’s 100 Most Influential People.
His unique organisation encourages people to take three pieces of rubbish with them when they leave the beach, a waterway, or anywhere for that matter.
It came to life for the first time in 2009 when Mr Silverwood, as a keen surfer, became overwhelmed by the increasing risk of plastic pollution on our oceans and wildlife.
Since then, his profile and cause have grown significantly in stature.
In 2011, Mr Silverwood made headlines after sailing 5000km from Honolulu to Vancouver to study the infamous “Great Pacific Garbage Patch”, an accumulation zone containing vast quantities of plastic that stretches from the USA to Japan.
The following year he established “Re-chusable” where he aims to provide sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics and inspire a cultural shift from polluting, damaging and wasteful items.
Mr Silverwood has also been invited to speak at many TED Talks over the years.
His tireless advocacy for a better tomorrow for our oceans and waterways, all from humble beginnings on the Central Coast, have inspired many.
“He has made people listen, understand and change their behaviour to help save our oceans and their inhabitants,” one voter said in our online poll.
