PATONGA’S Jocelyn Maughan OAM paints her way into the top 20 at number 19.
The Central Coast artist is well known across the region for her work, and is the director at the Patonga Bakehouse Gallery. She also offers free exhibitions to other artists.
Her life and work was recently honoured in an exhibition at Meadowbank TAFE where she ran the fine arts school for almost 30 years. She also taught art at Abbotsleigh school in Wahroonga before joining TAFE.
According to the reader nominations, Mrs Maughan “is a wonderful contributor to the fine arts with her time and money. Her art is outstanding and she is a very strong supporter of young painters”.
“Not only does she sell her paintings and others, she mentors many young and aspiring artists, she is a generous philanthropist to artists both on the Central Coast and in Sydney. When Jocelyn has an exhibition she will often sit in the gallery and talk to the visitors. Her guidance and encouragement of others makes her a wonderful influential Coastie.”
On her website, Mrs Maughan says “painting and drawing ‘on site’ have always been my delight”.
“I believe that nature is a marvellous resource awaiting an imaginative interpretation by the artist. Drawing is learning to see: a way of getting to know my fellow humans and their environment.
“My sketchbook accompanies me on trains, buses, to public forums, and when travelling overseas.
“My heroes have been the Australian artists Ivor Hele, Noel Counihan and William Dobell; others are Felix Topolski, Honoré Daumier, Andrew Wyeth, Jean François Millet and Rembrandt, all figure draughtsmen.”
Another reader nomination said he was “blown away with her passion for fine art and her commitment”.
“I have since discovered she makes awards available to a number of art groups and institutions including the National Art School.”
