Woy Woy’s Fudge Monkey is one of a kind, mastering the art of gluten-free and vegan sweets which ooze decadence and indulgence.

IT starts with a biscuit base, a layer of chocolate chiffon cake, white chocolate ganache, followed by a layer of macadamia and hazelnut Italian meringue buttercream.

Top it off with a chocolate ganache and you have the most delectable, divine hazelnut supreme mud cake.

Did I mention it was vegan, and has the most wonderful textures let alone rich flavours.

It’s one of the amazing creations from Woy Woy’s Fudge Monkey.

The Blackwall Rd store has been open for three years, and offers 32 flavours of fudge, milkshakes, gelato and a range of gluten-free cakes and handmade sweets, as well as a large range of gluten-free vegan sweets.

Owners Ganesh Crumlin and Angie O’Sullivan have been a part of the Woy Woy food scene for the past three years, initially making fudge for markets.

“People kept asking what was gluten free so after three markets, we started making everything gluten free,” Mr Crumlin said.

Soon they were making gluten free cakes and, once the home kitchen became too cramped, they moved to the shop in Woy Woy.

Since then they have mastered the art of gluten free as well as vegan desserts and sweets.

“We retaught ourselves how to make things, converting recipes into vegan,” Mr Crumlin said.

“Our goal is to make things taste like you would expect. The flavours of the product should be the feature, not the sugar. We like to always keep things handmade and fresh, everything is sourced locally.”

After devouring the mud cake, we sampled the new range of home made pies on offer.

My pick was the No Butter No Chicken flavour, made with jackfruit and potato curry. The flavour is just like butter chicken, but lighter, not to mention healthier, with a crisp top and melt in the mouth base.

Mr Crumlin said the pie flavours we based on his families favourite meals.

It’s been an exciting journey for the husband and wife team, who both have executive backgrounds.

“I gave it up and decided to do something that not only makes me happy but other people happy as well,” Mr Crumlin said.

“We are not bakers, we taught ourselves everything. We just love it and we are the only 100 per cent gluten free place within 100km of here.”
