The son of a retired local firefighter and Labor state election candidate was arrested after a vehicle stop at Ourimbah where he was allegedly picked up with $270,000 cash, drugs and ammunition in his car.

Cameron Craig Sundstrom, of Green Point, faced Gosford Local Court on Friday charged with five offences including knowingly deal with proceeds of crime, supplying and possessing prohibited drugs, possessing ammunition and supplying a large commercial quantity of drugs.

His father Jeff Sundstrom supported him in court but has not been charged with anything and there is no suggestion he had done anything wrong.

Cameron Sundstrom’s lawyer Ahmed Dib applied for bail, telling the court it was the 25-year-old’s first time in custody, he faced a lengthy delay in having his legal matters resolved and in the meantime could abide by strict conditions including that he wear an electronic ankle monitoring bracelet.

Mr Sundstrom’s arrest came after Riverstone Police Area Command detectives established Strike Force Cairns in February when officers stumbled onto an alleged clandestine drug lab at Rouse Hill.

Police will allege NSW Sheriffs attended a property on Terry Rd on Monday, February 20, to conduct an eviction when they allegedly came across illegal drug manufacturing equipment.

A crime scene was established and officers from the State Crime Command’s Drugs and Firearms Squad, Chemical Operations Unit and The Technical Forensic Support Unit processed the site where they allegedly seized a 1kg pressed block of cocaine with an estimated street value of $400,000.

On Thursday officers attached to the State Crime Command’s Raptor Squad stopped a vehicle on the Pacific Highway at Ourimbah just after 6pm.

During a search of the vehicle, police allegedly seized $270,000 cash, MDMA, cannabis, ammunition, and items consistent with the manufacture of prohibited drugs.

Mr Sundstrom was arrested and taken to Gosford Police Station where he was refused bail to front court the following day.

The police prosecutor told the court it was a “strong case” against Mr Sundstrom and involved various forms of surveillance which allegedly connected him to the Rouse Hill property and “clear criminal associations”.

Magistrate Jennifer Price said at 25 years of age Mr Sundstrom was not that young and there was no evidence he had “come from a background of deprivation”.

She said the proposed bail conditions were “not a fail safe method” of mitigating all the risks associated with granting Mr Sundstrom bail.

The court heard Mr Sundstrom was unemployed and supported by his father, who was seated in the rear of the public gallery.

“He was found with $270,000 in cash and he’s someone without any sensible means of income,” Magistrate Price said.

“Taking the case at its highest it is a strong prosecution case.”

Mr Sundstrom silently mouthed some words to his father and another supporter in the rear of the court as he was refused bail and led back into custody.

He was adjourned to face court again via video link on October 20.

Mr Sundstrom is the son of retired Kincumber firefighter and local Labor Party stalwart Jeff Sundstrom who contested the seat of Terrigal in the 2015 and 2019.

Jeff Sundstrom was also a former Central Coast Councillor who was elected in 2017 but suspended along with the other 14 councillors in October 2020 after the council was found to be spending restricted funds.

Jeff Sundstrom has not been charged with anything and there is no suggestion he has done anything wrong.
