Buff Point: Paedophile Alex Chak Lau jailed for abusing eight children

One of eight victims of Buff Point paedophile Alex Chak Lau said the 50-year-old’s sentence wasn’t long enough for the lifetime of hurt and trauma he inflicted on defenceless children.

What to do if you think a child is being abused

Paedophile Alex Chak Lau, 50, has been sentenced two years after officers from the Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad raided his Buff Point home and seized a number of electronic devices including a storage disc with two videos depicting children under 16 engaged in sexual activity.

Lau faced Downing Centre District Court on Tuesday where Judge Sharron Norton sentenced him to 10 years jail with a non-parole period of six years and six months.

With time served since his arrest in 2019 he will be first eligible for release on May 5, 2026.

However at least one of his eight child victims, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, told the Express Advocate he was expecting a longer non-parole period.

“The general consensus is it’s a bit light,” Lau’s victim said.

“If 10 years was the minimum it would be more like it but six and a half years non-parole is not really reflective of what he’s done.”

The victim, who has since grown up, said Lau’s actions “terrorised the community” however he said was glad the protracted court case was over and “it’s all out in the open”.

The victim was one of six boys and two girls abused by Lau between 2008 and 20016.

An agreed set of facts states Lau first abused a seven year old girl as well as her sister.

“The victim laid awake for the rest of the night, scared, confused,” the facts state.

Lau moved to Scenic Drive, Buff Point, in September 2010 where he met a boy.

After the boy had a swim he took a shower where Lau indecently assaulted him.

The following year Lau offered to drive him home but stopped in the Jelly Beans Preschool car park and locked the car’s doors before indecently assaulting him.

He did this on two other occasions, the facts state.

One afternoon in 2011 Lau broke into the boy’s house while his mother was out and sexually assaulted him.

He tried it again two days later but the boy grabbed a knife and a phone and threatened to call the police.

Lau indecently and aggravatedly assaulted five other boys between 2011 and 2016.

His offending only came to light two years later when the victims confided in their parents and a teacher filed a report.

Lau pleaded guilty to 21 offences including two counts of sexual intercourse with a child; two counts of detaining a person with intent; aggravated breaking and entering; two counts of aggravated sexual assault and 10 counts of indecent assault.

Judge Norton described Lau’s offending as “appalling behaviour”.

“This was a prolonged period of offending against a number of victims which highlights the need for specific deterrence,” she said.
