Berkeley Vale: TrendPac celebrates 20 year anniversary with ALDI

Most people on the Central Coast have never heard of TrendPac. But if you shop at ALDI, chances are you have one of its products in your laundry or under your kitchen sink. Here’s why.

It had all the hallmarks of a perfect marriage: One was a quirky German supermarket looking to expand into Australia, the other was a small family-owned manufacturer looking to expand its business.

Fast forward 20 years and local Berkeley Vale manufacturer TrendPac is supplying 120 different products to ALDI supermarkets across Australia.

TrendPac was started in a Sydney garage in 1963 by Jim Hyde and Ken Twigg focusing on a growing need for local hair care products before expanding into household cleaning.

In 1982 Mr Twigg passed away and the Hyde family bought out the Twigg family’s share of the company. In 1992 TrendPac established its own plastic moulding facility to make packaging as well as its own cleaning and personal care products.

Chief Executive officer Wayne Dicks said the company relocated to Lisarow in 2003 before purchasing its current premises at Corella Close where it operates 24-hours a day, five days a week.

Mr Dicks the proudly family-owned, third generation company employed about 215 people.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of TrendPac’s partnership with ALDI, which has grown to account for about 50 per cent of the Berkeley Vale manufacturer’s business.

“We have a saying in TrendPac, if you can dream it, we can make it,” he said.

“ALDI had a dream to expand its footprint in Australia and we wanted to expand our business.”

Mr Dicks said the “ideal partnership” with ALDI was continually evolving as TrendPac’s research and development team of 14 staff sought to improve existing products and develop new ones.

“One of the key things for us, which has worked well for TrendPac and ALDI, is innovation,” he said.

And it appears to have paid off with a number of TrendPac’s products gaining cult popularity among ALDI customers.

TrendPac’s Di-San Oxy Action Pre Wash Stain Remover has won the “cleaning” category in ALDI’s customer awards program for the last two years and is nominated again this year along with TrendPac’s Green Action Dishwashing Liquid and Green Action Cleaners.

Mr Dicks said the biggest focus going forward was making products from sustainable, environmentally friendly materials such as recycled plastic and resin for it’s bottles and containers.
