Bateau Bay Square: Woman hit by bus Leigh Black honoured with fundraiser

A fundraiser has been launched to honour the memory of a “most amazing mother” tragically hit and killed by a bus at a pedestrian crossing outside Bateau Bay Square shopping centre.

The tragic truth about road deaths in Australia

Leigh Black was an amazing mother of two young children, devoted wife and tireless small business owner whose tragic death has touched hundreds of lives.

But her legacy will live on in the form of a playground or the upgrade of a local park for all families to enjoy after a fundraiser has been launched in her honour.

Mrs Black was knocked down and killed at the pedestrian crossing outside Bateau Bay Square on August 19.

Emergency services were called to the northern, Woolworths-end, entry of the shopping centre about 9.30am.

Paramedics worked on the 46-year-old but sadly she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 64-year-old bus driver and his passengers were uninjured.

Tuggerah Lakes Police and officers from the Crash Investigation Unit established a crime scene with the bus driver returning a negative roadside breath test.

Meanwhile, grieving friends and family have remembered Mrs Black as “beautiful, kind and full of life”.

Mrs Black moved to the Central Coast with her husband Jeff and the couple’s two children from Sydney four years ago before opening the Simply Better Wine bottle shop and deli at Avoca Beach.

Friend Vanessa Kooger has started a GoFundMe page to raise money on behalf of Mrs Black’s husband, children and family to upgrade a park or purchase playground facilities in her memory.

It started with a fundraising goal of $5000 and within three days had already surpassed $7,565 in donations.

“Leigh was a 46-year-old loving and most amazing mother to two young children, and a devoted and loving wife,” Ms Kooger’s fundraising page states.

“Leigh was beautiful, kind and full of life. Leigh was an extremely giving person and always put others before herself. Leigh was a local business owner, who was extremely hard working, she was also actively involved in our local community and always gave back to charities close to her heart.”

Ms Kooger said Mrs Back’s sudden passing had impacted a lot of people in the community.

She said Mrs Black was a “fun mum” who loved taking her children to local parks, beaches and playgrounds.

“In honour of Leigh, Leigh’s family would like to use any money raised to give back to the community by upgrading a local park or playground facilities that all families can come and enjoy,” the fundraising page states.
