The tragic death of a father and son after an horrific crash on the M1 has rocked the community. Police have renewed calls for information to help piece together what led to the tragedy.

A father and son killed in a devastating collision on the M1 Motorway are being remembered as “ loving and hard-working” — as a grieving mother and son are offered support following the tragic deaths.

Ewen Jubb, 46, and his 14-year-old son, Alex, were killed when a Mitsubishi Challenger hit their holden Commodore in the centre median strip of the highway at Ourimbah at around 9am on September 3.

A family spokesperson told The Newcastle News wife and mother, Bernadette Jubb, had received “massive support and help from police and other services” following the tragedy, which was an “ongoing investigation”.

Ewen, a local building certifier, and his son Alex — from Coal Point in Lake Macquarie — were understood to be waiting for NRMA on the median strip when the SUV struck them, according to the family member.

“(they are a) private, loving and hard-working family,” the family member said.

”The school and Alex’s friends had been notified.”

NSW Education Department sources confirmed parents and students at Merewether High School had not yet officially been notified of the incident.

However, peers and teachers of 14-year-old Alex Jubb had been offered counselling and ongoing support on Monday morning.

“Parents at the school are expected to be notified once the family has approved the notification,” the source said.

The shocking tragedy has seen social media erupt with messages of tribute and support for the family on Monday, with one Newcastle resident describing the deaths as “So tragic”. ”My condolences to the family,” she said.

Another said the collission was “so heartbreaking” with others expressing sadness for the Jubb samily.

The offer of support to the family comes as Police renewed calls for help as they work to piece together what led to the M1 crash.

Crash investigators are asking for any information over the accident.

The 27-year-old male driver of the SUV wasn’t injured and was taken to Wyong Hospital for mandatory testing. He has since been released from hospital.

Officers from Tuggerah Lakes Police District established a crime scene and an investigation was launched by the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit.

Initial reports stated that the father and son had pulled over on the grass medium strip and became bogged around 9am when before the SUV lost control and veered off the highway. An off-duty police officer and a nurse attempted to help the crash victims at the time.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed or has dashcam footage of the incident, or the events leading up to it, to come forward.

In particular, police would like to speak with motorists with dashcam footage who were in the location between 8.15am and 9am.
