HUNDREDS of new jobs are set to be advertised as construction of the controversial Australian Taxation Office building on Gosford waterfront nears completion.

Federal Minister for Revenue and Financial Services Kelly O’Dwyer said many of the 600 new recruits would begin work later this year.

“More jobs for the region will have a flow-on impact within the community and will see a boost for many existing businesses,” Ms O’Dwyer said.

“Construction to date has injected over $7.5 million into the local economy with most of the work being completed by contractors local to the Central Coast and surrounds.”

The ATO boost comes as work is about to start next door on a mixed-use commercial building housing 300 finance workers after former failed Sydney company St Hilliers was awarded the contract to develop the waterfront site.

Robertson Federal Liberal MP Lucy Wicks said locals were set to be the big winners with the new ATO job opportunities.

“The ATO will establish a vital link with tertiary campuses in the area, providing career opportunities for our young people,” Mrs Wicks said.

The Hunter Central Coast Joint Planning Panel approved the ATO building a year ago and did so “well aware” that frustrated residents were expecting a performing arts precinct on the old Gosford Public School site.

No Tax On Gosford Waterfront co-founder Angelique Perak said the key issue was “the total inappropriateness of placing a government office tower on our waterfront precinct”.

ATO jobs will be advertised from August 24. A variety of positions will be available for people with tax and legal expertise, as well as customer service, leadership, administration, finance and accounting skills.
