A towering three-storey self storage facility complete with two internal lifts and a building footprint half the size of a typical rugby league field is coming to the coast.
Storage King West Gosford, a subsidiary of the national chain, took Central Coast Council to the Land & Environment Court after its development application (DA) for a new facility at 13 Tathra St was “deemed refused”.
After three conciliation conferences on February 10, March 10 and March 24, Acting Commissioner Helena Miller said on Friday, May 9, the parties had reached an agreement and she approved the DA with additional conditions.
But it wasn’t a total loss for council with Ms Miller ordering Storage King pay $4,000 in council’s legal costs.
The decision gives the green light to a $7.83m knock-down-rebuild on the 3,744sq m site, which currently houses a metal fabrication business.
Storage King owns the block and plans to clear 26 of 30 trees on the site, including another on a neighbouring block, to make way for a massive building with a footprint of 1,660sq m.
Spread out over three floors the building will have a total gross floor area of 4,805sq m and a total “lettable area: of about 3,600sq m.
“Access to storage units above ground level is provided via two lifts and three stairwells strategically located for customer convenience,” the DA states.
The three storey building will be 12.2m tall, 56.6m long and 29.7m wide — just shy of half the size of a regulation football field.
“The self-storage facility will have secure access available 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” the DA states.
“The proposed location within an existing industrial precinct and the transient nature of people using the premises, would prevent unacceptable impacts to surrounding land uses.”
Storage King West Gosford was approached for comment but had not responded at the time of press.
