When an East Gosford resident started the fight for his road to be repaired, Froggys was opening, the Australian Reptile Park was in Wyoming and INXS played at the Narara Music Festival.
More than 35 years on, Lushington Street in East Gosford is set for a $6.6 million upgrade.
The street is one of 29 that are set to undergo major upgrades as part of the Federal Government’s $70 million funding commitment from this year’s election.
Central Coast councillors unanimously voted for the roads at Monday night’s meeting.
Ken Campbell, along with many residents if Lushington Street, is thrilled with the announcement.
The road will be upgraded from Henry Parry Drive to Coburg St and will include pavement reconstruction, kerb and gutter, footpath and street drainage.
Last year residents spoke out against the lack of work done in their street which is often used as a shortcut to avoid the Wells St/Henry Parry Drive intersection. Mr Campbell has been calling on the council to install kerb and guttering and fix ongoing safety issues for more than three decades. However the issue goes beyond his campaign.
“I do remember being present when my father had a meeting with the council in the early 1960s, and he was told not to worry because the kerb and guttering would be fixed in a couple of years,” he told the Express previously.
The $70 million package was committed to congestion busting road improvements, and to increase safety on local roads.
The intersection of Ocean Beach Rd and Rawson Rd in Woy Woy will receive a $16.5 million upgrade including changing the intersection from a roundabout to traffic lights.
Steyne Rd in Saratoga will receive a road and draining upgrade to the tune of $11.3 million between Bay View Wharf Lane and Irwan St.
Copacabana residents are also cheering, with councillors ticking off the Del Monte Place $10 million upgrade from Segura Street to Oceano Street, while Ridgeway Rd in Avoca Beach, from The Round Drive to Cape Three Points Rd, will receive $7.3 million for pavement reconstruction, kerb and gutters, footpath, traffic calming and street drainage.
