They really are glorious, aren’t they? The red brick art deco apartment blocks that line the streets of the east, proliferating the New South Road side of Rose Bay, quaint and historic. Peer through the keyhole and you will find many of have been renovated up to the moment, with no interruption to their external charm.
Take Jasmine Lindsay’s second floor apartment for example. Perfectly positioned across the road from Woollahra Golf Club, an expanse of calm green stays with you as you enter Jasmine’s minimalist, two-bedroom home.
The dark brown timber floors and white walls are a perfect backdrop to the simple, chic interior which Jasmine, designer of the cult sleepwear line Jasmine and Will, decorated when she moved in a year or so ago.
No need for Marie Kondo here, each piece is carefully chosen, a penchant for blue and white ceramics is a pervading theme.
I spot Jasmine’s Hermes Kelly Bag, which she tells me was, quite simply a ‘gift to self’ six months earlier.
“I’ve always believed in purchasing classic investment pieces,” she says.
Clearly that philosophy carries over from her choice of accessories to her interior style. Read on to discover more.
How would you describe your personal style? It’s definitely evolved with age but I find elegance in quality and simplicity. That sensibility also translates to the Jasmine and Will brand from our classic navy and white branding to our beautifully tailored pieces.
My style is natural and relaxed – never too formal – and I decorate the same way.
I love to marry lush textiles like cashmere and velvet with informal elements like jute and sisal to create a blend of elegant and casual.
What do you love most about your home? That the art deco architecture marries with my affinity for blue and white interiors. I love that it merges old and new. The beautiful high ceilings and cornices mixed with the clean lines of a modern kitchen and bathroom. It’s classic, but still fresh and youthful.
What is your favourite room? The living room is a happy, cosy room, and great for entertaining. People feel they can come in and put their feet up and I love that.
Who did your interiors and what was the brief? I did. I’ve only recently moved here so it’s still a work in progress. A neutral colour palette is a must with some blue and white of course – it’s in my DNA!
I start with the big foundation pieces and opt for timeless classics placed in a symmetrical layout then I layer in a less formal way with textiles, art and objects to create a more effortless, lived-in look.
Mixing vintage and modern pieces is my favourite way to decorate. A lot of my coral and blue and white Chinoiserie has come from my travels and I love being able to associate parts of my home with those memories. I am bingeing on the Pinterest account of interior designer Mark D Sikes.
What scent reminds you of home? I like to change my scent with the season. Summer is absolutely my favourite time of the year. If I could live a continuous summer I would. Fiori De Capri by Carthusia is like a Mediterranean holiday in a bottle. For home, I have been burning Maison Blazac La Plage candles which as the name suggests transports you straight to the beach.
What is the best gift you’ve received recently? An Amazon Echo and monogrammed cocktail napkins. They elevate any gathering.
Name three favourite items in your wardrobe that you love: I love these three and they’re also the items I wear almost daily.
Bassike high waisted jeans. If you catch me on a weekend, I’m most likely wearing a men’s button-down with Bassike jeans - preferably barefoot.
Jasmine and Will Silk Cashmere is my favourite for lounging at home and travelling as the silk and cashmere blend is unbelievably soft. Our new malbec shade is so elegant.
I have a black Joseph blazer - it’s a classic that changes your look in an instant. There’s something very strong and chic about it, especially for the office.
And there’s the Hermes handbag of course.
What would you like to change about your home? I’m eagerly awaiting some sisal rugs and have my eye on art by William McLure for the living room.
Is there music in your home? I tend to favour the oldies from Al Green to Van Morrison and Fleetwood Mac.
If you could live anywhere else in the world where would it be? Anywhere by the ocean as I always feel at home by the sea.
What’s your hosting style? I love a lively dinner table conversation so I always invite my great friends and add some new and different people into the mix. I set the mood with great lighting (candles are a must) and good music, which means a diverse playlist.
